This setup consumed significantly more fuel than the base 2WD model.
Ford previously announced specs for the F-150 diesel. However, it is late with arrival. Meanwhile, engineers are updating the existing engine to deliver even better numbers. Some reports say the PowerStroke unit could be capable to deliver more power than Chevy Silverado 1500 diesel. Of course, this is the main rival to the 2020 Ford F-150 Diesel. In this segment, we will also find Ram 1500, while Toyota is probably giving up on Tundra diesel truck. Nissan Titan XD is out of the league with a 5.0-liter turbodiesel engine.
2020 Ford F-150 Diesel Specs
Under the hood of the 2020 Ford F-150 Diesel is a 3.0 V6 engine. The Powerstroke turbodiesel unit can produce 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. That is 30 ponies and 10 pound-feet shorter than Ford F-150 Diesel fiercest rival can do. On the other hand, Ram 1500 and EcoDiesel engine are capable to create 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is sending power to rear or all wheels. The towing capacity of the F-150 diesel will jump over 11,500 pounds. Currently, the most capable petrol engine is good for 11,600 lbs (5.0 V8).
Fuel Economy Needs Improvements
Most details about the 2020 Ford F-150 Diesel were available right after its premiere at the NAIAS 2018. But, Ford left information about fuel economy for the other occasion. Later, the company unveiled a mystery. The new truck will be able to return 30 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in urban areas. That would be 25 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive. But, when you install the AWD system, the fuel consumption jumps radically. It cuts 5 miles. That is probably the main problem Ford will try to fix. We will see if the new model can handle this situation.
Competition
We already mentioned main rivals to the 2020 Ford F-150 Diesel. Definitely, the first in the line is Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel with the new 3.0-l Duramax engine. Still, the FCA and Ram managed to steal the show in Detroit. Also, the Ram 1500 Diesel was the central an of the 2018 Superbowl, one of the biggest TV shows. Although Ford puts extra effort into this pickup, they won’t have an easy task to get rid of the competition.
2020 Ford F-150 Diesel Price
The entry-level F-150 Diesel is using a two-wheel drive in combination with SuperCab. Available with the XLT trim, the new pickup costs $47,000. It is an upgrade worth $5,000 above the standard setup, and $2,000 more than the model with a V8 engine. With the Platinum trim level and diesel engine, the new F-150 truck will cost at least $60,000.
