It is time for the new generation and a lot of changes, but this doesn’t mean the expansion of the market to North America. Hilux stays one of the most popular options worldwide, and US buyers are still happy with Tacoma. Well, older fans will remember this nameplate being available, and some of them called it just Toyota Pickup.
The 2022 Toyota Hilux will be redesigned and some say even the new generation is coming next season. The current edition was launched in 2015 and it already went through a couple of facelifts. That is why Toyota is a leader in the market, although the competition is more than tough.
2022 Toyota Hilux Best Engines
The truck will offer a few options, but a 2.8-liter D-4D is the most popular drivetrain. Recently updated, an oil burner is ready to create 200 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. Compared to what we see in the US, that is at the same level as the Duramax mill for GM pickups. Still, Hilux can tow 7,000 pounds, which is 700 lbs less than Chevy Colorado, or Holden Colorado, where the truck is available as the rival. Nevertheless, even if the 2022 Toyota Hilux appears in the US, this drivetrain is not going to be part of the lineup because of high emissions. The company has other plans – to deliver a hybrid configuration for the mid-size pickup.
Hilux vs Tacoma
These two trucks are usually called twins. But, although the size and function are the same, there are plenty of differences between them. The 2022 Toyota Hilux will be slightly shorter and a diesel engine is the main choice. On the other hand, US truckers find Toyota Tacoma as one of the most reliable pickups in the segment. A V6 engine is going to produce nearly 300 hp and make the truck haul 6,800 pounds. So, Hilux is more capable for towing. Options are the same, and we will find the latest technology. Tacoma TRD Pro is considered as one of the most capable off-road vehicles. But, Hilux also has an ace upon the sleeve.
2022 Toyota Hilux Rugged X
A couple of years ago, Toyota Australia drew the attention to the Hilux with three special editions of the truck. Rogue and Rugged were unique upgrades. But, the 2022 Toyota Hilux Rugged X stole the show. The pickup introduced snorkel, skidplates, towing hooks, 4×4 drive, and bulbar, all in one package. Immediately, it become as popular as the Ford Ranger Raptor, if not even more famous. In other parts of the world, you will find Hilux Invincible as the top of the range version with a lot of extra upgrades. But, when it comes to the off-road drive, it is not even close to the Rugged X and Tacoma TRD Pro editions.
