2022 Toyota Tundra Is Getting A New Engine

We already wrote about the 2021 Tundra. Toyota wrote off chances for a diesel engine. But, all other options are still opened. For example, a twin-turbo V6 or a hybrid configuration can refresh the lineup, or even replace the sturdy V8 in the upcoming 2022 Toyota Tundra. Now, the new details are out. The Japanese carmaker filed for the registration of the new trademark – “I-Force Max”. Soon, we will have an official update.

Experts believe rumors coming from the company. This should be the new engine in the lineup and the new 2022 Toyota Tundra is favorite to present it. It is going to be quite a refreshment, but all we know so far is the name of the trademark. The “I” in its title might represent hybrid technology. However, experts leave the door open to other possibilities.

2022 Toyota Tundra New Generation?

We found some information about the next-gen Tundra. According to the 4Runner forum, the Japanese company will start updating its big rigs in 2022. The first two vehicles to enter the new generation will be the mid-size SUV and the full-size truck. The new trademark came to fit these rumors perfectly. The new generation with the powertrain switch is definitely something we want to see.

But, the “I-Force Max” is not the only trademark Toyota applied for. Another nameplate we will see in the future is the Lexus LX 600. There are different stories behind this title and the new one is again an excellent fit. Fans were talking about the new drivetrain the number “600” in the title represents. Could it be the ”I-Force Max”?

2022 Toyota Tundra Specs

Currently, the Tundra truck relies on the big and powerful 5.7-liter V8 engine. This one is capable to fight against other large rigs. It returns 380 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. In combination with the TRD Pro model, the pickup seems to be unstoppable. But, its major problem is fuel economy. We don’t expect big numbers, but 16 mpg is too low.

2022 Toyota Tundra I Force Max

The new “I-Force Max” will probably be the twin-turbo V6 configuration with similar outputs and better gas mileage. On the other hand, we will see how would smaller block work with huge loads. Well, the Ford Expedition is the best in class hauler among SUVs, and it gets power from a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 drivetrain.

Another option is a hybrid engine. There are a lot of talks, but so far the only system we see is the mild-hybrid Ram 1500, which is not what we actually expect from such a vehicle. Toyota is a leader in this segment and it won’t be a surprise if it happens before Ford develops its F-150 Hybrid. Ram is already out, but this truck doesn’t seem like a true competitor, while the GM is not taking action in other classes where we can find plenty of hybrids.

Final Thoughts

The 2022 Toyota Tundra definitely needs a refresh to stay competitive. In the last couple of seasons, the truck is losing pace, mostly because of the redesign and new generations of its direct competitors. The Japanese truckmaker is ready to fight back and we can expect more news next year.
