2022 Ford Maverick Compact Truck Full Review

Maverick is not an unfamiliar nameplate in Ford’s portfolio. However, more than 4 decades have passes since the last time the compact car was in production. Now, in 2021, it comes back, but like the pickup. The 2022 Ford Maverick is a compact truck, the first of a kind in the market. Currently, we can find mid-size and half-ton models.

Last year we saw spy photos of the small truck. Some sources claimed that the vehicle is going to be called Courier. The latest rumors are reporting about the 2022 Ford Maverick. The compact model will be the only one in the market, and there is another pickup built on the unibody platform, Honda Ridgeline, while all others are using BoF architecture.

2022 Ford Maverick Specs

Under the bonnet of the 2022 Ford Maverick will be a small and efficient motor. The first unit coming to our mind is a 1.5-liter inline-three engine with 180 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. Being based on the same concept as the Escape crossover means two vehicles will share drivetrains. The truck might also return up to 30 mpg combined. Towing capacity is not going to be spectacular, since the Maverick is going to be a small urban truck for city streets.

Another solution is a 2.0 EcoBoost drivetrain with 250 horsepower. We see this one as the ST model of the pickup. It is not so likely to happen, since the gas mileage and practicality are priorities.

2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid

To maximize efficiency, the 2022 Ford Maverick could deploy a hybrid configuration. Again, we are turning to the Escape crossover, which can do 44 mpg in the city. A truck with such mileage would stun the market and it would be a perfect solution for quick deliveries. A 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle unit is the center of the system and we can expect around 200 horsepower.

What Spy Photos and Renders Are Showing?

There are a few certain things about the 2022 Ford Maverick. The truck will be based on Escape crossover. The light design will boost agility and fuel economy. These are priorities. Spy photos are indicating the truck will use a similar design language as its sibling. But, unique features will make it more aggressive. A two-door cab configuration seems to be the only logical choice since a four-door layout would kill the storage room in the bed.

Release Date and Price

The small truck will be the most affordable vehicle in the pickup segment. Experts say the MSRP must be under $20,000. Of course, Ford will prepare a wide array of trim levels, with exclusive models using more powerful or hybrid units, and premium equipment. In this case, the cost will rise to $30,000.

Rumors are serious about the production happening in Mexico. Arguments are strong – Ford would avoid “chicken tax” for the US imports, and the market for Europe and South America stays open as well. We will know more during 2021 when the truck officially debuts. We believe the company aims the premiere at North American International Auto Show in Detroit this summer.
