The new generation of the best-selling truck is on the way. Ford F-150 is being tested and according to reports, there won’t be big updates on the diesel engine. The Powerstroke unit has shown up as a reliable engine and the offer is going to be expanded to more trim levels. One of them will be 2021 Ford F-150 Diesel Raptor.
The competition in the segment is coming from well-known rivals. General Motors is also entering the off-road segment with the Silverado ZR2 model, and among numerous rumors, diesel is one of the options for Chevy’s truck. Also, there is the Ram 1500 that surpassed Silverado in sales last season.
2021 Ford F-150 Diesel Specs
The diesel engine for the F-150 was the hottest topic for a while. The carmaker finally launched it in 2018. The arrival was questionable – in the time when greener sources of power are overtaking the market and the end of diesel power is near, the biggest carmaker in North America takes this move. The 2021 Ford F-150 Diesel will meet all the emission and efficiency requirements by EPA.
The truck is getting power from a 3.0-liter Powerstroke engine. It is not the most powerful unit in the segment with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. Both its rivals are offering more. But, the F-150 is the best pickup for towing with 11,500 lbs. The engine is paired with a ten-speed automatic gearbox and sends power to rear wheels. The four-wheel drive is optional.
Powerstroke vs. Duramax vs. EcoBoost
Ford is making its own engines. Powerstroke has shown great potential and the Blue Oval company is taking advantage of it. With the new turbodiesel powertrain, they stood against Duramax and EcoDiesel units. The most powerful truck in the segment is Silverado with 280 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Ram 1500 can do 260 hp and 460 lb-ft, while F-150 is at the bottom of this list. But, when it comes to the towing capacity, Ford’s truck is better than its rivals with 11,500 pounds, compared to 11,300 of Ram 1500 and only 9,600 pounds Chevy Silverado Diesel is going to return.
F-150 Raptor Gets a Diesel
Raptor is a model for the toughest tasks. Under the hood of this model is not a big V8 engine, as many of us would expect. Ford is using a 3.5-liter high-output V6 powerplant instead. The Raptor can produce 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. So, it seems like the Powerstroke unit is not capable to serve as an alternative. However, engineers can enhance the outputs and performance of the 2021 Ford F-150 Diesel to make it part of the Raptor lineup.
2021 Ford F-150 Diesel Release Date
A diesel engine will be available with other drivetrains right at the start of sales. The company plans to launch the next-gen truck later this year. The price will be higher than before and we can’t wait to see what does the Raptor model is going to bring. Also, the competition won’t stay still. With all the info about the arrival of F-150 Diesel, we didn’t pay too much attention to its rivals, and most experts think the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel stole the show in 2018.
