Is Ford F-350 Best Dually Truck in the Market? Here are a Few Other Models That Could Change Your Mind

Having a dually truck means you need to tow and haul huge loads. These models are based on standard heavy-duty and chassis cab trucks. With double wheels at the rear axle, engineers are improving traction and balance. This is very important for driving loads in tough conditions, around construction sites, and off the road.

What’s more, the dually truck needs to get strong support from the engine room. If you are about to haul over 30,000 pounds… If not, stick to the standard configurations and lighter pickups, such as Ford F-150. This is the best-selling truck of all time. But what about its sibling from the larger segment? Can F-350 dominate the class like F-150 is doing? Let’s see.

Ford F-350 Super-Duty Dual-Rear Wheel Truck

Price: $49,000

Towing Capacity: 32,000 pounds

Most truckers are finding full-size trucks as good enough for their needs. So, the towing capacity of 32,000 lbs could stun them. But, this is a whole new class and the Ford F-350 dually truck is specialized for hauling big loads in construction sites.

Still, the base model can’t tow so much. The proper configuration includes the PowerStroke turbodiesel engine and fifth-wheel gooseneck system. A 6.7-liter V8 unit will deliver 450 hp and 930 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel drive are standard.

Note: dual-rear wheel setup is also available with a petrol engine (6.2-liter V8, 385 hp, 430 lb-ft, towing capacity 17,000 pounds).

Chevy Silverado 3500 Dually Diesel Specs

Price: $50,000

Towing Capacity: 35,500 pounds

Archrivals are bringing the battle to the heavy-duty truck segment. Silverado 1500 vs F-150, or Mustang vs Camaro might be more popular, but the competition between Chevy Silverado 3500HD and F-350 is also very important (heavy-duty pickups are generating the most profits for truckmakers).

The capabilities of the Chevy Silverado 3500 are nearly the same as for the F-350 Dually. General Motors are using a 6.0-liter petrol V8 engine, but we can get the best from it. For the maximum towing capacity you must use a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine. It can produce 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. The new 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD raises the bar for the towing capacity, by offering  35,500 pounds.

1,000 Pound-Feet Rated HD Dually Truck – Ram 3500

Price: TBA

Towing Capacity: 35,100 pounds

Cummins is breaking the record. Their 6.7-liter high-output unit is going to produce stunning 1,000 lb-ft of torque for the new 2020 Ram 3500HD. Converted to the towing capacity, that is 35,100 pounds. The price is not unveiled yet, but expect the increase from the last edition.

To get the maximum towing capacity from the 2020 Ram 3500, you need the dually configuration with gooseneck system. Properly equipped, the truck returns monster outputs. An Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission is a power router that sends energy to all wheels. Fully-loaded, the Ram 3500HD dually truck is going to cost a fortune.

GMC Sierra 3500 – Silverado With Unique Styling

Price: $53,000

Towing Capacity: 35,500 pounds

There are no many differences in the engine room between the GMC Sierra 3500HD and Chevy Silverado 3500. The GM twins are using the same engine and transmission, for the same outputs and towing capabilities. Well, the lovers of the GMC will find some interesting features on this model. We would like to highlight the Denali trim level.

This is the premium package for all other GMC vehicles. The dually truck is also offering the same package with 17-inch wheels, park assist feature, Multi-Pro tailgate, a transparent rearview camera, leather seats with heating and cooling. This will make the GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali one of the most expensive truck in the segment, with starting price at $65,000 (diesel).

The Return Of Chevy Kodiak (Silverado 4500)

Price: $47,000

Towing Capacity: 25,000 pounds

Not only the heavy-duty class is using a dual-rear wheel configuration. The medium-duty chassis cab uses this setup by default. Well, the configurations are very similar, but these vehicles offer more convenience. After all, these are working mules only. You won’t find series 4, 5, or 6 trucks cruising around the city so often.

Chevy Kodiak was a series 4 chassis cab. The company discontinued it ten years ago. GM launched the new dually truck in this segment as Chevy Silverado 4500HD. We can say it is Kodiak, only rebadged. This model is tuned to return 350 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. This is good for a maximum towing capacity of 25,000 pounds.

Note: General Motors is not making series 4 truck with the GMC Sierra badge

Dodge Ram 4500 Chassis Cab Dually Truck

Price: TBA

Towing Capacity: 25,000 pounds

The FCA is also competing other two US companies (GM and Ford) in the chassis cab segment. The company produces the Ram 4500 and 5500 commercial trucks with the same Cummins engine that will reach 1,000 pound-feet of torque next year. For the series 4 and 5, engineers will detune the powertrain.

Currently, the Dodge Ram 4500 dually truck is producing 725 lb-ft of twisting power and 325 hp. This is good for maximum GVWR of 32,500 pounds (towing capacity 25,000 lbs).  If you need more, then the Ram 5500 adds 5,000 pounds for both segments.

Ford F-650 and F-750 Medium Duty Trucks with Dual Rear Wheels

Price: $56,000

Towing Capacity: 30,200 pounds

Ford advertises their F-450 and F-550 trucks as a part of the Super Duty segment. The commercial offer comes with series 6 and 7 pickups. There are no surprises there – both models will get the power from a 6.7-liter turbodiesel Cummins engine. In this case, the drivetrain is producing 270 hp and 675 lb-ft of torque. Optionally, commercial trucks can have 300/330 hp and 700/725 lb-ft.

Another option is a 6.8-liter V10 petrol engine as an alternative. The popular Triton unit is still in use for these models. The single configuration returns 320 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the setup, the maximum towing capacity is 22,000-30,200 pounds (F-750 Diesel with Tractor package).

Chevy Silverado 5500 (TopKick)

Price: $50,000

Towing Capacity: 26,000 pounds

Series 5 and 6 trucks by General Motors are increasing everything you are getting from Kodiak pickup. There are no big differences, but truckers will find extra towing capacity very useful. The Silverado 5500HD can tow 26,000 pounds. It also costs more.

Like the Kodiak, we know the series 5 truck as the TopKick. At the same time, these two models were discontinued. Now, GM is reviving the class and we hope they will bring back old names. Until then, the company will stick to the proven Silverado nameplates.

Toyota Tundra Dually Diesel Truck Concept and Specs

Price: TBA

Towing Capacity: TBA

That is not all about the dually truck segment. Another big truckmaker plans to spoil the dominance of US companies. Of course, that is Toyota. The Japanese carmaker is a leader in many segments. It manages to compete with Ford, GM, and FCA in the half-ton pickup segment. However, they need larger vehicles to bring them on to the next level.

The Toyota Tundra dually truck concept is based on a diesel model. Both are still speculations, but we can’t write off chances of the Japanese truckmaker. We can see customized pickup, but this is not the production model under the warranty. Well, fans created the dually truck of a mid-size Tacoma. We hope this one is not getting such a production version.
